Dear [MP NAME]
The climate crisis is here and now – this is not news to you. But did you know that animal agriculture produces one-fifth of all greenhouse gas emissions? Many strategies for climate change mitigation focus on improving efficiency, technological advances and reducing food waste, but the view within the scientific community is that this alone will be insufficient to meet our current targets without unprecedented technological advances, meaning that dietary change is needed. I encourage you to consider the actions you could be taking as an individual and your responsibility as an MP to better support UK citizens and wildlife.
The UK is overly reliant on other countries for our food supply, with roughly 40 per cent of all food being imported. Eating less meat is the easiest way to improve our food security. According to Defra, over 60 per cent of grain grown in the UK in 2020 was used as animal feed. By eating plant-based, we can repurpose this land to home grow most of our crops and rewild our beloved natural landscape.
Changing the way you eat is the single most effective action you can take as an individual to lower your impact on the environment.
I would like to invite you to support the campaign Halfway Heroes, which is calling for members of the UK public, as well as restaurants and businesses, to go 50 per cent plant-based for the planet. This campaign is designed to help people make the connection between their diet and the environment while supporting them to take their first steps to eating more plant-based meals.
Halfway Heroes aims to show the impact that small changes in our day-to-day lives can have.
By swapping your dinner to a vegan option, you can cut your meal’s…
- climate impact by half
- wildlife impact by half
- land use by 74 per cent
- water use by over 50 per cent
I would love for you to join and make the Halfway Hero pledge today.
Why not also publicly endorse the campaign? Share your pledge on social media #HalfwayHeroes or reach out to info@halfwayhero.org for more information.
The science is clear – and the solution is on our plates. This is your opportunity to lead the UK towards a greener, more food-secure future. Take action today.
Yours sincerely,
